Attention network marketers! You know who you are. You know this business, and you have attended an opportunity meeting or two. The other day, in the middle of an opportunity meeting for MonaVie’s Acaiberry drink. I stepped back and just watched. I saw the confident expressions on all the willing participant faces. Their emphatic applause imparted the hope that one day they would succeed. Hope that one day they would earn an income enabling their dreams to come true. In this relentless pursuit to self-reliance, I wondered how much money they spend, how much energy and faith exert, and how much time they spend for their network marketing careers.

The numbers do not lie. The vast majority of network marketing ventures end in failure (much like any business venture). However, few businesses create a following where meetings are more like religious revivals than training meetings. This MonaVie meeting was excellent. The speaker, an attractive master at his craft, could say no wrong. The faithful applauded loudly, hanging on his every word. He is the living epitome of success, and all watching apparently wanting to emulate him.

Anyone who has cashed a hard earned commission check knows that the heart of network marketing beats in the meetings we hold and attend, much like attending church. MLM 101 dictates that meetings generally consist of three main elements as follows:

1. Product Explanation- improves your life
2. Corporate Background- trusted individuals who help you
3. Business Opportunity- get ahead in life

Truly successful “networkers” have very good, informative, and motivational meetings. The cutting edge product is absolutely essential to your health, corporate figureheads are noble with supreme business acumen, and most importantly, the sense of urgency with their unique business opportunity rivals the need for food and water. My question is, how is this different than a religion? Religions might be characterized with the following:

1. Product- better way of life (a set of rules to live by)
2. Corporate Background- trusted servants (God and his servants)
3. Business Opportunity- get ahead in life (go to heaven, not to hell).

Maybe this is a stretch. But, it is evident that many religiously follow their MLM. In my last meeting it happened to be MonaVie. Passionate belief in their juice and business opportunity justifies what the vast majority pays (or donates). All to be a part a company that is very much bigger than they are individually. Yes, they certainly do get something for their money, and some do end up making a good living. Is it a freakin’ religion? No, but I think it is close. Is that necessarily a bad thing?

I agree with the author of this article, to a point. It IS true that most MLM’ers use meetings as their bread and butter to bring people into their business. I also agree that the vast majority of network marketing ventures FAIL. What the author failed to point out, though, is that it is the very system of trying to set up meetings that is causing much of the failure.

The simple fact is, MOST people are not interested in a network marketing venture, regardless of how optimistic you are about your company’s future. You can show them all the videos and powerpoint presentations you’d like; they are not in a place in their life where any of it really makes sense for them. So, most network marketers approach anyone and everyone to try to locate the few that ARE looking for an opportunity.

Think about what I just said there. THEY are looking for an opportunity. So, why spin your wheels weeding out all the people that AREN’T? Most network marketers fail because they become frutrated with the overwhelming number of ‘no’s they need to hear between each ‘yes’.

In this day and age the internet has given us all the ability to find what we seek much more easily. There are millions of people online every day wanting to find a better way; a better life.

I have found a system that teaches network marketers how to have those people find THEM, and it is a revolutionary new approach to this business. The best news is that you can now do VERY well in network marketing, and you no longer have to convince your friends, family and co-workers that they are missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime. And you can give up the weekly meetings, too.

Lane, I appreciate very much your response. However, please indulge my hostile response to you.

You sir are selling a load of bull crap. The truth is there is NO SHORT CUT TO SUCCESS IN NETWORK MARKETING. In order to be successful at it you have to accept it for what it is. I make an honest living in Network Marketing. It is work. It takes salesmanship, it takes passion, it takes confidence, and it ABSOLUTELY TAKES THE ABILITY TO HANDLE 1000 NO’S TO GET A SINGLE YES. If you cant handle that, you should NOT be involved. I started network marketing highly sceptical, but my upline INSPIRED ME, truthfully. The 7 lies? You people are vultures feeding off hard-working mlm’ers. Frustration is a part of gig.

You are selling a bull crap system. Prove me wrong. Show me your downline (I know you wont)- if you really have one. You are making money off an ebook, not doing mlm. What your book should read is “If you cant handle mlm, don’t do it.” But you wouldnt sell very much that way would you? Bogus.

  3. Deb Says:

I disagree, it is not a religion. I have been involved in Net work marketing before and they are just passionate and believe in what they are selling. Look at any franchise. They hold seminars and meetings. They boast about how good their product is. How does that make them different from network marketers? The only difference in the business is the way things are advertised. Franchises spend thousands of dollars advertising while network marketing uses word of mouth. They are just as passionate about the product they are selling as any franchise owner is. Why does some network marketing fail? Because it is easy to quit when you the initial start up fee is so low. If you had more money tied up into it (eg franchise) you don’t quit that easily. I would certainly hope a franchise owner doesn’t want to quit just because a few people came into the store and did purchase anything. To each his own. Net work marketing does teach a lot of positive traits to use in every day life (eg not to be negative!). Stop hacking on Net work marketing….some larger companies have ruined the reputation of network marketing, but not all are that bad.

Well put Deb. Thank you for your response, I agree it takes huge commitment. I just think that some people cling to the networking dream like they would a religion. Not that it is bad to do that- and here’s to being more positive too!!!

  5. Lane Says:

    Bob,

First of all, I want to make it clear that I am not bashing network marketing in and of itself. I am a MonaVie distributor myself, after all. I think it is a wonderful way for the average person, who is willing to put the time in, to make an above average income. It’s just a matter of spending that time wisely, to maximize results.

You actually helped to strengthen my point with your ‘hostile’ retort, when you you said it “ABSOLUTELY TAKES THE ABILITY TO HANDLE 1000 NO’S TO GET A SINGLE YES”. Do you honestly consider this the best possible way to market and build your business? That is absolutely ludicrous.

Even if you have the fortitude to deal with that kind of rejection, you are saying that each of those people you sign up has to be equally strong. I don’t know about you, but I want to build an organization that will be strong for years, and that means helping my team to build strong teams of their own. According to you, each member would need to ask 2000 people just to get the 2 they need to become qualified.

I’ll let the reader be the judge here. What sounds better? Approaching thousands of people to find that needle in a haystack who is looking for an opportunity, or learning the real skills and methods that will start bringing those people to you? I have no problem with letting friends and family know about your new business, but what are you supposed to do when you’ve told everyone you know, and only 1 person has joined your organization? Wouldn’t it be prudent to develop some alternative methods, at least at THAT point?

This is not a short cut, by any means. It takes time to develop the right skills, but isn’t it time we treated network marketing like what it is: a legitimate business model that requires legitimate business methods?

If you don’t agree with what I am saying, you are entitled to your opinion. I can say with total honesty, though, that it is not my intention to ’sell an e-book’. My goal is to help those seeking to build a successful network marketing business, by utilizing what I have learned from this system.

Network Marketing is a great system, and it must be approached as an real legitimate business. Mr Lane makes a great point, and Mr. Bob maybe you should do a little research before you make hostile responses?

  7. Will Says:

Monavie has to change its payment Structure. The 2% gross commissions SHOULD NOT go to the greedy exectutives but to the hard working MLM players. The structure is not team oriented and you are building your competitors as for everyone you bring in They get to add more to their main leg and even get to add a new leg by passing the original team players. Everyone in the stranded tree gets suckered. Word to the wise choose your team wisely and know who are the execs. I would like to see how many added a new leg. I am in a crown black diamond and have yet to see his name on my downline after 1 year. The ones I see have retired from the business.
